ever since unicef posted the pictures above, it started gaining awareness to those out of the philippines. sadly this has been around for a long time and change needs to come.
the philippines’ LEGAL age of sexual consent is 12 years old. yes, 12 years old, making it the lowest age of consent in asia and one of the lowest age of sexual consent in the world.
this makes the philippines one of the countries with the HIGHEST numbers of child exploitation, child trafficking, child pornography , and other numerous violations that abuses children and their rights. what’s sad is that these families FORCE their children to do these sexual acts just to provide for their basic needs.
these families sell their children as well in the black market, selling them to foreigners for them to use the children as sexual props for their own income, the children’s mothers forcing them to do such acts only because they know it’s the only way for them to survive, it really is that tough in the philippines.
since when can a child at the age of 12 give consent to sexual activities ?? now that’s the problem.
the other issues that come with this is that this age limit is too low to determine statutory rape ( statutory rape is defined as sex / sexual acts performed with minors BELOW the age of consent ) which also means that any sexual acts done with a child as young as 12 is NOT considered as child rape.
since the age of 12 is the legal sexual age of consent in the philippines, it’s easier for these criminals to get away with lesser charges / penalties , which makes it more emotionally breaking to them as they are left with these scars for the rest of their lives while the men who took away their childhood, their rights, are just sent to jail and fined for how many years only.
the philippines and it’s government is corrupt, meaning if you have the money to pay the police then it’s easier for you to get away with your crimes.
to those who catch HIV / AIDS under the age of 18 cannot get a test without parents consent. what’s concerning is that even here in the philippines, we don’t have the proper basic sexual education we need probably due to our christian background. minors in the philippines CANNOT get contraceptives and condoms to protect themselves from this.
the pregnancy among minors between ages 10-14 has increased by 7% in 2019, recording a number of 62,341 minors who gave birth in the philippines.
there are many more reasons as to why this situation is wrong, but these are just some points and reasons and even hearing these alone should make you aware that these children and women alike are going through physical , sexual and emotional violence.
this petition linked down below is to change the sexual age of consent in the philippines, as well as make better laws enforcing protection of minors against these predatory acts, equalizing protection for the victims of rape and bringing back these children their rights.

- as someone who almost got r*ped at around 12 years old by their own cousin this is really disgusting and scary thank god i woke up and got away quickly, imagine not having the urge to tell it to your parents thinking they won't believe you and might blame you for not covering enough :))
- hope it gets better here and the fact that teenage pregnancies are being normalized here and they think it's cool just because they didn't abort it especially when they don't even have anything to the child (it's actually illegal here in the Philippines i believe?) bruh idek now

thank you for speaking on behalf of our country and its minors. i’ve always been against the legal age being below the standard because it always ends up bringing harm to the victim’s end rather than the one at fault.
as a filipino who is a minor, even this sickens me because of how insensitive the law is and how objectifying it makes children and minors seem.
someone had to raise awareness and speak up especially for the children who were forced to keep silent due to their shame of going through something like that, it literally breaks my heart so much that everything that’s supposed to be beautiful in their childhood has been taken away from them due to fear and shame.
as a filipino minor as well, this makes me feel unsafe even though i’m more than lucky enough to have family who respect and would also take care of me. but i feel so much guilt because of all these children who have no idea what’s going on and they think it’s alright because their parents are making them do so, it breaks my heart even more knowing that most of the children who are suffering s*xual v*olence are here in my home country.
