Hi! Today I'm going to be offering some

tips about saving and earning money.

Of course, a lot of this is dependent on

how old you are but hopefully this will

help some of you!

Part time jobs are, of course, a good

way to start making an income. It is

important, though, to try and get a job

with an employer whom accommodates

the student lifestyle. Weekend jobs are

usually the best option for students,

but also look into evening jobs!

Zero hour contracts are also an option,

but make sure to do plenty of research.

Are they known to give out very little

hours to their employees? Are they

understanding when you can't do a

shift that's been offered to you?

Hopefully, these aren't issues you will

have to face. A lot of companies are

very understanding of young workers.

Of course, your studies should primarily

be a priority over part time work. You

can still be a good employee whilst

putting yourself first!

Part time jobs are also great for later

employment! It's also a good point to

put into a personal statement for school

applications. You end up with a lot of

transferable skills, regardless of what

kind of job you have had. For example,

my job in retail was a big help in me

forming my nursing application. I was

able to show, in a practical way, my

communication skills and that I can

work well as part of a team.

Put in extra hours where you can. Look

at times like over the summer holidays.

A lot of companies (particularly retail)

need the extra help over this period. It’s

also the best time to be looking for

temporary jobs!

Temporary jobs are perfect for some

students. They are a great way to earn

some cash whilst leaving yourself fully

available for studying during term time.

The best times to look for these roles are

around Christmas, Easter, the summer

holidays ect...

Saving money is something I used to

struggle with. It’s easy to want to spend

everything you earn when you do first

start working. However, it’s important to

try and teach yourself to save money as

early on as possible.

One way to do this would be to set

yourself a challenge. For example;

’This year I want to have £1000 saved

toward a car’. This will encourage you

to want to save. Give yourself mini

rewards such as ‘I’ll have a manicure

once I’ve saved £300’.

This is also the time to point out that

you should keep track of the money

you do have. Keep note of the shifts

you have done and if you have been

correctly paid for them (if you’re

working). It’s also good to check

your online banking somewhat

regularly. Make sure you know how

much you have on your card and

make use of your savings if

you have one (it will give you a small

interest bonus).

It’s important to know what is worth

a bit of extra investment versus what

you should get cheap. Especially when

shopping for school.

Things like books are a good example.

Aim for second hand options or online

copies. If you do some snooping, you

may even find the book you’re looking

for free (either online or at a library).

I’d suggest to start your search by

looking up ‘free textbooks’ on Tumblr.

A lot of students links for these

documents to social media for others.

Do you need the item at all? Sometimes

it’s worth assessing what you already

have. For example, old school supplies

are often still useful for the following

school year. Thoroughly assess your

options first and foremost.

What should you invest in? Some items

are worth paying more for in order to

have the item for a longer time. Make

sure you can’t get a quality item for a

cheap price first! Reviews are a really

good way of assessing what you should

aim to pay for the right product. Also,

take a look at second hand options!

This is a good idea for things like

electronics. It’s also good for the

environment as well as your purse/

wallet. If a good alternative can’t be

found, make sure you get the product

that will serve you the best.

That’s it! Hopefully this will help some

of you. Please comment if you have

any questions!
