Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci was
a scientist, mathematician, engineer,
inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor,
architect, botanist, composer, and writer.
He lived from April 15, 1452, to May 2,
1519. Leonardo was schooled in the
workshop of the renowned Florentine
painter Verrocchio after being born as
the illegitimate son of a notary, Piero da
Vinci, and a peasant girl, Caterina, at
Vinci in the area of Florence.
He spent a large portion of his initial
working years in Milan working for
Ludovico il Moro. He later worked in
Rome, Bologna, and Venice before
finishing his years in at the
residence that King François I had
provided for him.
Leonardo has frequently been referred
to as the prototypical “Renaissance man,”
a person whose inventiveness was only
sured by his seemingly limitless
curiosity. Probably the most gifted
person to have ever lived, he is regarded
as one of the greatest artists of all time.

Leonardo was and is largely known for
his paintings. The Mona Lisa and The
Last Supper, two of his paintings, hold
the title of being the most well-known,
frequently duplicated, and frequently
copied religious and portrait paintings
of all time, with Michelangelo’s Creation
of Adam coming in second. The
is also well-known.
Only fifteen of his paintings are said to
still exist; this low number is a result of
his continual, usually disastrous
experimenting with new techniques and
his propensity for putting things off.
Nevertheless, his journals, which include
sketches, scientific diagrams, and
reflections on the nature of painting,
along with these few pieces of work,
represent a gift to following generations
of artists that is only sured by that
of his colleague, Michelangelo.
