so i touched on this a little in my

last blog, but study guides are

one of my favourite ways to

revise. you can keep everything

organised in one place, with

everything shortened down to

what you need or want to know.

i’m going to explain how i’m

making one i’m working on, as

well as providing some tips for

making one yourself!

the guide i’m making will be about

scrub nursing (the nurse who

assists a surgeon in theatre).

first of all, you’ll want to figure

out how you want to make and

store your guide. i typically make

mine digitally and store them on

my laptop, unless i know i’ll need

to refer to it often.

in this case, i know i’ll refer to

this one often. i’ll also have to be

able to change it often, since

a lot can change in surgery. so,

i’m going to make templates on

my laptop, but then print them.

i’ll use a folder to store it in,

which will allow me to change

the layout or add in new

procedures whenever i need to.

you’ll probably know a bit about

the topic already, but it’s worth

organising some sources and

perhaps finding some more.

i’d recommenced keeping

some kind of bibliography. i’m

personally going to make a

table on word that i can add

sources to as i find them.

this is a good way to space out

the work you’ll need to do, as

well as keeping everything

more organised.

for the guide i’m making,

there’s quite a lot to cover. my

main sections will be anatomy

and physiology, surgical

instruments and surgical

specialities (that i’ve had

exposure to, as different

hospitals cater toward different

specialities). i will also look at

some stuff about post op and pre

op, as well as medication usually

used throughout the surgical

journey. i use dividers to split

all of these up. each speciality

would need a section for;

anatomy and physiology,

instruments that are exclusively

used in that speciality and post

op indications.

i’d always recommend making

some templates, whether you

are making a digital or physical

guide. this will make the process

a lot quicker. with everything

in the same format, it’s also a

lot easier to find information

when you need to!
