Gentian root (Gentiana lutea)

Courage, strength and determination - those are three main powers of a plant which we are covering this month of June. Gentian root is an ancient herb with a rich cultural heritage.

So, let's start with an introduction,

Gentian root is one of the strongest bitters known. It is the standard to which all other bitters are compared. At dilutions of 1:12,000 it still has a bitter taste. How this properties affect spiritually, we will find out soon as well.

When it comes to medical properties, it stimulates the digestive system in general. Gentian root reflexively stimulates the gall bladder and pancreas.

Safety data: "Gentian root is generally recognized as safe and effective. Large doses have been known to cause a gastroenteritis-like irritation."

Gentian root in Witchcraft

As mentioned above, courage, strength and power of determination make this herb proper for achieving any spellwork. It is based on earthy and grounding qualities.

Burned in offerings: Gentian root can be burned in offerings to the spirits of protection to overcome obstacles and promote courage, strength, and determination, among that it can be carried as a dry herb in a pocket or in a mojo bag.

Midsummer Magick: Summer Solstice Ritual Oil Spell Jar | Celebrating LItha

What you will need for this spell jar.

Citrine Chips: Represents creativity and happiness

Dried Lavender: Brings peace and luck

Dried Rose Petals: Enhances luck and emotional connection

Sweet Almond Oil: Associated with wisdom and prosperity

Small Reusable Jar with a Lid

Small Funnel or Tweezers (for filling the vial)

Before you begin, take a few moments to ground yourself. Hold the empty jar in your hands and visualize your intention for creativity and good luck. Feel the spiritual energy of the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, and let it fill you with warmth and inspiration

Find a quiet and comfortable space to create your spell jar. If possible, do it outside in the summer sunlight! Cleanse the area using the method of your choice to ensure clear, positive energy

Place a layer of citrine chips at the bottom of the jar. Sprinkle in the dried lavender and dried rose petals. Finally, fill the jar with sweet almond oil and securely close the jar with its lid.

Sit with the completed Spell Jar in your hands. Visualize solar energy filling the jar and say an affirmation or mantra of your choice. Here are a few ideas to help get you started-With solstice rays, my dreams ignite, shining brightly day and night

Solitary Summer Solstice Ritual

Ritual Supplies Needed:

God Candle Incense Sticks and holder

Bowl of Salt Bowl of fresh water

Candle for fire element Lighter or matches

A small yellow or gold drawstring pouch or square of fabric

Cakes & Ale (recommend golden oreos and lemonade)

Libation Bowl (needed for indoor rituals only)

Crystal or Stone (should be clear, white, yellow, orange or red)

Note: this celebration of the Solstice is in the Kozy tradition and is likely to be different from how other traditions celebrate the solstice.

While many of us work with moon magic on a regular basis, June

ia time to focus on Sun. In June, we have the Summer Solstice, which

otis the longest day of the year. The sun is at it's peak. This is the day

of the year that holds the most sunshine, the most warmth. This is

the day to celebrate the sun god. Naturally, we will want to celebrate

this day by working sun magic.

When working with Sun Magic, it is important to have clear a focus on only one specific intention. The purpose of this ritual is to harness the energy of the Sun and connect with the God energy that resides within each of us, male or female. This ritual would be best done outside in the sunlight. Naturally, if you do not have access to an outdoor space with enough privacy, then indoors, during the day, in a room lit by sunlight would work quite well.

When choosing your stone, you can purchase one at a metaphysical shop or you can go to a beach or riverbed and find a nice, smooth and roundish stone which should be clear, white, yellow, orange or red.

Begin your ritual by preparing your body (bathe), mind (review your ritual making sure you have all your supplies) and spirit (ground and center) to enter ritual space.

Set up your altar in your usual way. Light your fire candle and incense. Cast your circle and call the quarters to guard it. Welcome Spirit to your circle and then call upon the Sun God to you. If your ritual is indoors, make sure that you set up your circle near a window and that at least part of your ritual space is in sunlight.

You may call upon the God in his many aspects, or you may choose a specific Sun God. I will call upon Apollo, but you may choose a different Sun God, if you wish.

“Great Lord Apollo, God of Light, God of the Sun, God of Creativity, God of Healing! I call to you and invite you to witness and bless my rite. Please lend your magic to my workings. Hail and Welcome.”

Light the God Candle.

To begin, simply sit or stand in the sunlight, holding your crystal or stone in your hand. If your ritual is indoors, sit or stand in sunlight that is streaming in through a window. Keep your hand open so that your crystal or stone is in direct sunlight, also absorbing its rays.

Close your eyes and notice the warm golden light inside your eyelids. Feel the warmth on your skin and let that golden light absorb into your entire body until you feel yourself all aglow with the warmth. At this point, you can feel your connection to the God within.

Now focus on your magical intent, whether it be healing, inspiration, strength, etc. Charge your stone with this intent along with the energy of the solstice. Empower it with a chant. I have written one below that you can use or you can write one of your own.

My body bathes in the light of the sun

My heart sings in the light of the sun

My spirit soars in the light of the sun

Hail the Sun God. Hail the Sun God.

When the energy is at its peak, place your stone in the pouch or wrap it in the fabric, then ground the excess energy by enjoying your cakes and ale. to libate some to the Sun God in thanks for his blessings in your ritual and in your life.

Thank the Lord for ing your celebration, and then release your circle in your usual manner. Keep your stone in gold or yellow cloth or container. Whenever you are in darkness and need the energy of the light, you may take out your stone and hold it in your hand to once again feel that energy and renew your connection with the God within.

June marks the midpoint of the year and holds exceptionally strong seasonal and magickal significance. The name comes from the Latin “Iunius” and is likely derived from the goddess Juno, but it is also potentially derived from iuvenes, meaning “youth,” which matches the month’s energy of growth and transition (Oxford Classical Dictionary).

In folk traditions across Europe, June was associated with fertility rites, crop blessings and midsummer fires, many of which were later absorbed into Christian feast days or solstice celebrations (Hutton, “The Stations of the Sun”).

In witchcraft, June is a prime time for workings tied to abundance, health, and clarity. Herbs like elderflower, vervain, and mugwort are traditionally gathered around the solstice. Crystals useful for June include citrine for energy, moss agate for steady growth and pearl for emotional balance.

The month aligns with solar deities, nature spirits and goddesses tied to land and light, including Aine and Freyja (Pócs, “Fairies and Witches at the Boundary of South-Eastern and Central Europe”).

The summer solstice or Litha, usually falls between June 20th and June 22nd and is one of the major solar high points of the year.

It’s traditionally marked by bonfires, sunwheel symbols and ceremonial rites done at sunrise. This period is believed to be a type of thinning between worlds, making divination and psychic and or “astral” work especially effective.
