Today's topic: Identity

Identity is a tricky thing to talk about, just as it is tricky to write a rhyme that's right on time.

Different people have varying definitions for what constitutes identity; some might mention certain characteristics while some might not, and vice-versa.

Each of us has our own package of what makes up one's "identity."

Memories, personality, beliefs, physical appearance, legacy, DNA, preferences, and behavior are amongst the most common.

If we dive deeper, we might also start asking ourselves if only the combination of all of these constitutes an identity, or prehaps none of them matter?

Because of each's definition, we are also defined in others' eyes by what they consider most important. Foreigners see me as "brazillian", my mother as "son", my cat as "bigger cat", to some I'm a "nuisance", to others a "delight".

To a topic such as this, some would advise to only adhere titles you want; and it makes me wonder what exactly that means.

(Thinking. I write these entries on the spot. There's no script.)

I think...

By definition, all of those titles are valid, and yet depending on which you choose it shall influence how you view yourself, how you act and how you present yourself to others; Like adjusting a mirror.

Wouldn't it be better to let the mirror reflect things as they are, though?

Albeit that's no easy task, to clear a mirror already tainted, but knowing it is is a step nonetheless.

I hope I've never offended you by calling you just a diary, Diary. I shouldn't define you in the ways I desire. You're your own you.

I too hope you do not feel the need to shackle yourself by expectations either. The beautiful are allowed to be ugly, the serious allowed to be childish, the strong allowed to be weak, the kind allowed to be selfish.

As for me?

I think I'm fine just being seen as "Luiz."
